Share what it's like, learning braille?

I'm sighted, but just might lose my sight, and am just beginning: I've nearly learnt the alphabet and the shortest contractions, and sent my first home-made Christmas card in braille.
Would anyone care to share tips, stories, or experiences about learning braille? (I will aim to visit every few days or so, and contribute.)
I'm on my own and am enjoying it!

Good for you! If you do loose vision, even just a little, you'll be very glad you learned braille.
The advice I most commonly gave my students when I was teaching was to begin labeling things as quickly as possible. The more you can get your fingers on the dots, the quicker their meanings will stick with you.
Gotta go for now but I look forward to reading about your adventures in Braille.

I started learning Braille when I was three or four. the last time I was tested, I read 165 words a minute, but i'd like to bring my reading speed up. Unfortunately, the only way I can do that is by getting a Braille display, and those things cost an arm and a leg. Grrrr. agree with post seven regarding labeling things in the home. Good luck, and please keep us posted.
